AIも驚く超人的絵師伊藤若冲の「動植綵絵」

「これほどまでに美しく細やかな描写のニワトリは見たことがない」
と感銘を受け心を奪われ続けている江戸時代の絵師伊藤若冲が描いた国宝「動植綵絵」。

その描写は顕微鏡レベルともいわれています。

今年の春、若冲の絵を後世にも伝えガラスケースなしで間近で観ることができるようにと最先端のデジタル技術を活用した高精細複製が展示されていると聴き、東京都国立博物館の表慶館に行きました。

この高精細複製はコピーで有名なキャノンと文化財活用センターの共同研究プロジェクトで制作されたものですが、絵画の複製技術がここまで進歩しているのかと驚かされました。

そして、今年秋にグランドオープンする皇居三の丸尚蔵館で本物の伊藤若冲の「動植綵絵」を観ることができます。

若冲の驚くべき技法の一つ「枡目描き」は、何万個ものマス目を色分けして動植物を描き出すという超人的な技法として知られています。

今はAIで瞬時になんでもデザインできますが、約260年前に存在していた「人間の技術力」はやはり偉大であり、新たに創造することは人間にしかできないことなのだと改めて感じました。

“I have never seen a rooster depicted with such exquisite beauty and intricate detail.”
These are the thoughts that captivated me regarding the National Treasure Colorful Realm of Living Beings (Doshoku Sai-e) by the Edo-period artist Ito Jakuchu—a work that continues to hold me under its spell.

The level of detail in these paintings is said to rival that of a microscope.

This past spring, I visited the Hyokeikan at the Tokyo National Museum. I had heard that high-definition reproductions—created using cutting-edge digital technology—were on display, allowing visitors to view Jakuchu’s work up close without the barrier of a glass case, ensuring his art is preserved for future generations.

These high-definition reproductions were produced through a joint research project between Canon—renowned for its imaging technology—and the Center for Cultural Heritage Utilization. I was astounded by just how far the technology for reproducing paintings has advanced.

Furthermore, the original Colorful Realm of Living Beings by Ito Jakuchu will be on view at the Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan (located within the Imperial Palace grounds), which is set for its grand opening this autumn.

One of Jakuchu’s astonishing techniques is known as masume-gaki (grid painting)—a superhuman method in which he depicts animals and plants by meticulously coloring tens of thousands of individual grid squares.

While AI allows us to generate designs instantly today, the sheer technical prowess demonstrated by a human artist some 260 years ago is truly magnificent; it reminded me once again that genuine creation is something only humans can achieve.
