“Feeling Like a Parisienne on a Bicycle”
You hop on your bike to head to your favorite café, breezing along the Seine and soaking up the atmosphere of the city.
“Comfortable, stylish, and good for your health.”
This has become the lifestyle of choice for many Parisians recently.
Paris once suffered from severe air pollution caused by traffic jams and exhaust fumes—an environmental crisis that stood in stark contrast to the city’s beautiful historic architecture.
To address this, the city aimed to create an environment friendly to pedestrians and cyclists by restricting car access, expanding bicycle lanes, and installing “Vélib”—stylish rental bikes in distinctive green and blue—throughout the city.
At the same time, they have pursued urban greening initiatives, creating spaces where people can rest in the shade of trees and enjoy nature, thereby realizing an eco-friendly tourist destination.
In Japan, too, various local governments are working on urban planning that prioritizes cycling policies.
Matsuyama City in Ehime Prefecture is set to host “Velo-City 2027 Ehime”—Japan’s first international cycling conference—in May 2027.
Researchers, companies, and government officials from around the world involved in cycling will gather there for the event.
A highlight of the conference will be the “Bicycle Parade,”
featuring a procession of 1,000 to 2,000 cyclists riding through the city streets.
For a unique way to enjoy cycling in Matsuyama, you might try riding along the Ishite River with a view of Matsuyama Castle, stopping along the way to snack on *Botchan Dango* (sweet rice dumplings) and compose a haiku.
I hope you take this opportunity to rethink your lifestyle—incorporating cycling, which benefits both your health and the environment, while leisurely enjoying Japanese culture.
