“Have you ever given any thought to how you carry your umbrella?”

A short video (Reel) I posted on Instagram recently about “how to carry an umbrella” was featured in an article by the online media outlet “LIMO.”

This past September, we saw a lot of rain, didn’t we—thanks to typhoons and the autumn rain front? I usually carry a folding umbrella to keep my hands free, but with so much heavy rain, I found myself using a full-length umbrella quite often throughout the month.

While walking around town with a long umbrella, I began to notice people carrying theirs in ways that could be quite dangerous.

Sometimes the tip of an umbrella points toward the person walking behind, or it comes close to striking someone passing by.

Yet, the people carrying them are often completely unaware of this. And honestly, that’s understandable—after all, you can’t be mindful of something you don’t even realize is an issue. We’re never taught how to carry an umbrella, and it’s not the kind of thing that would even cross one’s mind to ask about; it’s just such an ordinary, everyday object.

But if you take a moment to use a little imagination, you might start to consider the people walking behind you or passing by. Once you do, you’ll naturally become more mindful of how you hold your umbrella.

I’d be happy if you could keep this in mind the next time you carry an umbrella on a rainy day.
